“Ye Thibeu!” is a 'Nepali' play inspired by the deeply poignant and hope-filled Kirant myth of Thibiya, a story that powerfully portrays a mother’s eternal love and unending search.
In the Kirant community, it is believed that the bird known as Thibiya, also called Subiu, Sibi, Simikwa, Thyubimya, Thibikma, and by other names, was once a human woman. Her name was Thibiya.
One day, her only son, Thibe, was swept away by a river.
In search of her child, she wandered through forests, jungles, hills, and streams, endlessly calling his name:
“Thibeu… Thibeu…”
But she never found her son.
Consumed by unbearable grief and maternal pain, she eventually transformed into a bird so that she could continue searching for her child forever. Even today, it is believed that the sorrowful cry of the Thibiya bird echoing through forests, mountains, and rivers is not merely a sound. It is the voice of a mother still roaming through nature in search of her lost child.
The play explores themes of an endless search, maternal love, hope, and, above all, the profound relationship between nature and humanity, along with human responsibility toward nature. It raises a haunting question before society, communities, and all humankind:
“In our attempt to protect our own existence, are we destroying the existence of others?”
Additionally, the play brings patriarchy and its deeply rooted impacts into discussion, examining how it remains concealed within social structures and questioning whether its traces are still visible on the face of our society today.
